David Whyte: Preserving the Soul

Published on August 17, 2012 by Ruth Lee

For years, while working with clients, the question of how to relax and sleep better--or more easily enter meditation, came up and many were urged to read poetry…whatever they liked…to more easily escape mundane, everyday pains and problems bothering them.

David Whyte is author of several books of poetry and a book of prose and poetry, The Heart Aroused. He maintains that poetry provides a treasure of wisdom that gives guidance in times of crisis. The insights of poetry can facilitate an awakening of vision and a breakthrough from the paralysis caused by confusion, doubt and humdrum routine.

Whyte appeared on that great TV show Thinking Allowed with Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove and i discovered this excerpt from his interview and am confident you will remember much that he says now.   "Poetry allows us to acknowledge the fullness of our being in ways that are often denied in daily life. This denial has often proved both injurious to the soul and bad for business. Poetry unites us with the soul of the world."
