This will be Sgt. Tom’s third stint in Afghanistan, but you will remember him from our work together to help him find a place for his interpreter when he ended his third stint in Iraq a couple of years back. He was overwhelmed with the response of so many from our group of friends On The E with Ruth Lee. He could not believe that we had the resources and shared his concerns about finding a safe haven for a man who had helped him in Baghdad and was, as a result of working for the US, in danger of losing his life when his job was over.
To tell you the truth, I do not know if the Iraqi interpreter found a job and a new home elsewhere. We all did our best to help, but the US has been negligent about placing such men and women here. Norway has taken in over 40,000 Iraqis and we quibble about taking in less than 3,000 and its really our war. Isn’t it?
Anyway, I do not like the idea of Sgt. Tom going into battle again. This time I get a bit edgy contemplating it. I refuse to even look at the future that awaits him there. Please remember him and others who are very, very well prepared and so very helpful to our country’s goals regardless of what they may be.
I read that the general taking over in Afghanistan this week is changing methodology and orders to prevent so many civilian deaths. Sgt. Tom usually is sent in before the generals arrive, so maybe he is going to be there to see them leave? Wouldn’t that be a happy day for everyone?!
