Star Gazing Notes

Many thanks to AJV for sending us such a great letter and alerting everyone to upcoming sky shows. Coincidentally, this letter arrived Sunday morning my time and I was then viewing a planetarium showing at the Museum of South Florida in Bradenton and the self-taught, but extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable docent was talking about ‘the eye of God’ and how it is made, etc…. Great minds and all that!

Good Morning Ruth,
The stars have been incredible this week, but we have had rain and clouds so not all mornings are great. Last night, I went to sleep early so I could get up early and catch some great start gazing. It is getting chilly here in the AM, and it is still dark until 6 AM.....

Anyway, I woke up at 5ish (AM) and glanced out my window to see STARS, and a few clouds, so I jumped up and put on my fleece jacket and went out on the deck!!

WOW! There are at least 3 constellations I have never seen before (I don't know their names, I have to do some research to find out) AND!!!

Drum roll please, 4 shooting stars (which are really meteors, but that is not as much fun to say as shooting stars). I WAS SO EXCITED!!!

There were some (cirrus?) clouds in the sky but only in between the constellations. There were no clouds in the sky where the shooting stars were falling or streaking across the sky. If I was a "religious" person, I would say the clouds were shaped like big hands...the hands of God!

All of this happened within 15 minutes before the clouds covered the stars, what a blessed morning!!! And, it just so happens to be Sunday!

All this to remind you, that there is another meteor shower in November, called the Leonids, which is supposed to be spectacular this year, AND, it happens in early morning so you don't not have to be out at 2 AM until sunrise waiiiittttiiiing for something to happen, AND there is a new moon, so not a lot of competition from the moonlight! PERFECT conditions if it is not a cloudy night/morning where you live. You can just go outside and look up and see the sky burst into fireworks!

So if you are a star gazer, and you want to see a GREAT show from heaven, November 17/18, early morning, new moon! I usually try to get outside at 4:30 AM to catch the Leonids, but it usually starts right before dawn (it is darkest before dawn too, and coldest so dress warm).

Thanks, Ruth! You are an inspiration! HAPPY SUNDAY!
Much love, hugs and kisses, and blessings of course!
AJ
