Want to share a bit of a note i received from Birgit....
Ruth,
...Sounds you are getting back on your feet in no time:-)
BTW it was actually my Indian night; when I left you I headed to the Pavilion Cinema where they were playing the one and only showing of the Indian movie 'Jodah Akbar,' the most celebrated Indian movie to date...released in 26 countries at the same time and tells the story of the 16th Century Muslim Emporer who married a Hindu Princess and united the Indian Empire from Afganistan to China. A monumental costume movie with fight scenes and all, but it also was about 90 minutes too long, wth it's almost four hours. Christian and I didn't get home until about 1:30 am...
Aaah...so the memories flood back and my recent travels in India surface at last!
We were flooded with ads all over India about the upcoming debut of the great Indian legend. I must say that i knew nothing of Akbar until i started preparing my mind for the flight to India. Michael Wood created the most amazing history of India...which i list on my Recommended Books page...and that is where i first heard of Akbar himself...they say 'himself' a lot, so i parrot and use himself, too, when talking about an important person. :)
One of the 'discoveries' we made while traveling in India was to go to a cinema and view a movie. Roman, our Sikh guide, was upset because we were unable to see a traditional Indian Bollywood production that follows a standard formula of love, triumph, good over evil, etc...and instead it was a comedy, which i just loved.
He warned us that Indian movies are always very long with an intermission halfway so you can let everyone see you and so on. We went to the most gorgeous theatre that is 80 years old and in pristine condition; the audience was dressed beautifully and really join in and enjoyed it all by laughing and shouting in a timely and rather dignified way.
Anyway, Roman said we could not stand to sit and watch a Hindi movie longer than an hour or so, so he made us leave at intermission. i just loved the movie and got most of the jokes even though i know no Hindi. He was surprised that Kathy and I liked it a lot. As we were leaving our reserved seats in the middle of the audience, the lovely sari-clad young women in the row in front of me turned and asked if i enjoyed the movie. I laughed and said it was great and asked one girl to call me later and tell me how it ended! We had such a great time! You have to go to the movies whenever you visit india!!!!
I hope that Akbar gets out to other shows here abouts so i can see it myself. I am sooo into India!!!! :) ruth
