Steve Forbes, Warren Buffett, Ireland and the dollar

Hey Ruth,
I thought about you last night while I was listening to Steve Forbes of Forbes Magazine talk about the economy.  He was the first lecturer in Robert Morris University’s Lecture Series at Heinz Hall last night.  …one of the things Steve Forbes talked about was that we should look at Ireland.

He said 30 years ago Ireland was one of the poorest countries in the world and they turned themselves around so much that their economy is better than England, France and Germany.  He said that the middle European countries are now looking at Ireland as the model of how to turn their economies around.  He explained that one of the things Ireland did, which we should do in the United States, is have a flat income tax.  He said the United States has too many taxes and that the tax code, with over 9 million words, is too much for anyone to understand.

He blamed the current President for the weakening of the economy and especially the weak American dollar.  He said that this current bailout is not something he likes, but when the patient is having a cardiac arrest, you fix him, and you don’t think about who made the defibrillator.  He said that if we can fix the problems now, the economy will turn around by early next year.  The one thing he said that surprised me was that we needed to think about doing something like what happened centuries ago in Boston.  He said we need to rise up and say enough to the government and hold those persons responsible for creating this mess accountable.  Millicent
Note: Last night I tuned in Charlie Rose’s show as usual and Warren Buffett whom Forbes magazine has listed as Richest Man over and over again was on saying about the same thing ...we need the recovery package put in place asap whether we like it as is or not. I liked the first package a lot better than this one, but something has to be done and we cannot fool around. Watching the world’s leaders visit Charlie weekly and listening to all the wise of our country, too, no one should be surprised that we are now on the brink of economic meltdown.
When I was called to go to Ireland ‘to bring peace to the warring tribes’ I had no idea what it meant and why I had to go then. Ireland had previously never been on my list of places to visit before I die. So I was shocked when I crammed Irish history and economics before I left to find that life had changed radically in the previous nine years. The same happened when I went to India! Each time Clinton was cited as being instrumental in helping them get on their feet and discover capitalism. Wonder why we abandoned his plans??? Never trust politicians who hammer away at a personality and never mention his record.  That is a direct quote from Poli Sci. 101, and something we all need to keep in mind as we prepare to vote once again
