When Mel Gibson spars with a scholar, you have to wonder, but when he throws a well-known Mayan scholar out, you have to realize that he has a very mean streak going on...no matter what he says about it.
If you are confused by the land I love and what Mel Gibson sees in his mind, that was the idea. The Maya are traced back before the common era and ended with the advent of the Conquistadors. However, The Maya were not the same tribe as was remembered in Uxmal and Guatemala. Get to your history books and read about the Classic Maya and Pre-Classic Maya and then how they were invaded by the Toltecs and everything changed.
Some liken the advent of the Toltec religion as similar to any Fundamentalist take on a religion...they took everything literally...thus giving up your heart to God took on a whole new meaning. You decide, and check out what Mel had to say or actually how he acted...which is what he is paid to do.
