Let’s Study The Tao te Ching

The class on The Tao te Ching started February 5, 2010 here on The Blog, so you want to start at the beginning, as a wise man once said.   Be sure to provide adequate time for each class --  ignore any desire to skip ahead and view lessons before they are provided. We’re trying to develop a ‘critical mass’ here on The Blog that is able to talk about what we are learning -- what we think of The Tao te Ching.

All you need do to study one of the world’s great religions here is watch a video or two every day. Here is the final segment of a lecture by Alan Watts on the principals of Tao Te Ching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBlsOj9iS28&NR=1
Followed by The Tao of Kung Fu  - "Peace is prized above victory." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DhnAnGd8PY&feature=related

Amazing Coincidence

Last month by some amazing twist of fate, Facebook contacted people who apparently were hidden away somewhere in cyberspace as friends of mine at some point in time. I had no idea so many people would be asked to befriend me there, but it seems several were quick to respond and I was not so quick to acknowledge that they accepted my request for friendship. I am still working on FB mail that came in on 1/23/10!!

So, lo and behold, I open a letter yesterday from then and visit the FB profile of someone I do not recognize by name…or even by the little picture—at first. I skim the notes sent to him and notice one from a professor from Rice University to the effect that he wanted 'my friend' to be aware that everyone in the US knew of the disaster at Machu Pichu and he sent him best wishes, etc.

Daily Thoughts for February 2010

When you are happy or blue, are you thinking about you or are you worried about someone you once knew or one you wish would notice you?  Think on it and then smile.  How ridiculous to carry such burdens now.

Taking your own life in hand now, what do you intend to change and what will always remain as it is today?

All you need do to study one of the world’s great religions here is watch a 2-minute video today. Here is The Tao of Kung Fu - "Seek not to contend."  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SVzzhN-hQI&NR=1

Let’s Study The Tao te Ching

Starting up our studies on comparative religion was given a boost by a friend on Facebook who happened to share with me his work and web site and so on. I spotted a video I just had to view and that led to the discovery that we can all study one of the world’s great religions without having to do much more than pulling up videos from youtube and sitting still and listening for 2-10 minutes. Some of you will even find a whole new world and a way of life that you never knew existed as we move through religions of the world.

To begin, let’s listen to an excerpt from a lecture by Alan Watts discussing the principals of Tao Te Ching:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dimp_KXgdfY&feature=related
Now view a TV rerun from a 70s TV show. Do you remember Carradine on Kung Fu??? This clip takes 2 minutes, yet provides the essence of the lesson in a way you will remember…  The Tao of Kung Fu  - "Fear is the only darkness." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5kBqrHphjo&feature=related

Celebrating Changes in How We Communicate

For years we met via e-mail daily and discussed all manner of things and studied together, too. The group was so hugely successful that every so often I had to meet with a Security Officer of AOL to confirm that everyone was a friend of mine and not some commercial endeavor that should be carried elsewhere in their organization. We would reach 150 receiving daily e-mail and would have to start over and ask everyone to respond once again that they really wanted to receive my ‘stuff’. Cut back for a time, we would grow and have to do it all over again. Anyone remember those days?

We had a lot of fun, but it became a huge burden for ‘moi’ and Birgit suggested I convert everyone to using the new idea of a Blog as our primary means of teaching and reaching out. The Blog has never been embraced by my clients/friends as 'On The E with Ruth Lee'. So, what to do? We are now moving into Facebook and LinkedIn and so on, but The Blog is going to benefit from that because it now seems like a much smaller, safer world. That loss of intimacy and trust so many hated losing when we went to this means of communication now looks better. : )
To celebrate change and all our years of working together via the internet (since 1997) and sharing life, I want to institute one of the things we did a lot in the past. The study of comparative religions. It will be so much better now that we have access to videos and such! Instead of reading so much, you can listen or watch to get the picture. Hope you enjoy it. We’ll try it out for a month to see how it goes.
